The Power of Appreciation: Helping the People You Love Bloom

Author Generateed Image

Think back to the last time someone sincerely complimented you. Perhaps they thanked you for your kindness. They noticed the effort you put into a project. They admired your courage during a difficult season. Or maybe they simply looked you in the eyes and said,

"I appreciate you."

How did those words make you feel?

Chances are your shoulders relaxed. Your heart softened. You smiled.

A genuine expression of appreciation has the remarkable power to change the course of an entire day. Sometimes it even changes the course of a relationship.

Every human heart longs for the same three things:

To be seen.

To be valued.

To know that our presence made someone's life a little brighter.

Appreciation is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to meet those needs. It costs nothing. Yet its value is immeasurable.

The Beautiful Progression of the Heart

Over the past few blogs, we've been exploring a beautiful progression that leads us toward a richer, more meaningful life.

Presence opens our awareness.

Appreciation opens our eyes.

Gratitude opens our hearts.

When we are fully present, we begin to notice what we've been missing. The kindness of a stranger. The laughter of a child. The beauty of a sunset. The unwavering loyalty of a friend. The loving gestures of our partner.

Appreciation is the art of seeing. And what we consistently see has the power to transform our lives.

Appreciation Is the Art of Seeing

Appreciation begins with awareness. It is the ability to recognize the beauty, worth, effort, and significance of someone or something. You appreciate the colors of an evening sky. You appreciate the aroma of a delicious meal. You appreciate the strength your body regained after recovering from an illness. You appreciate the kindness your partner shows when they make your favorite dinner after a long day.

Appreciation quietly says,

"I see the value in this."

It is one of the purest acts of presence.

Gratitude Goes One Step Further

While appreciation is seeing… Gratitude is feeling.

Appreciation notices.

Gratitude receives.

Appreciation recognizes value.

Gratitude honors the gift.

Imagine watching a breathtaking sunset.

Appreciation says,

"What incredible beauty."

Gratitude places a hand over your heart and whispers,

"Thank you, God, for allowing me to experience this moment."

The same is true in relationships. You appreciate your partner's patience.

Gratitude moves you to say, "Thank you for loving me so well."

One opens your eyes. The other opens your heart. Together they transform ordinary moments into extraordinary experiences.

Walking Through the Garden

One of the central metaphors in my book, Love Is The Garden That Grows In Your Heart, is that love is like a garden. Every relationship contains flowers. Every relationship also has weeds.

The question is… What receives your attention?

Imagine two gardeners. The first walks through the garden every morning searching only for weeds.

"There are weeds."

"Those flowers are too small."

"You missed a spot."

"There are dead leaves."

Everything they say may be factually true. But they never stop to admire the roses.

The second gardener also removes weeds. But before reaching for the shovel, they pause. They notice the blossoms. They admire the colors. They appreciate the fragrance. Then, from a place of love, they gently tend what needs attention.

Which garden would you rather grow in?

Relationships are exactly the same. Healthy couples don't pretend problems don't exist. They simply refuse to let problems become the primary focus. Because whatever we consistently pay attention to…grows.

Attention is water. Where we pour it determines what flourishes.

People Blossom Where They Are Appreciated

I've come to believe that appreciation is one of the purest expressions of love. When we genuinely appreciate another person, we're silently telling them,

"I see you."

"I value you."

"You matter to me."

Those simple messages nourish something deep within the human soul.

Criticism creates a very different emotional reality.

Criticism says,

"I see what's wrong with you."

Appreciation says,

"I see what's beautiful about you."

One causes the nervous system to become defensive. The other allows it to relax. One contracts the heart. The other helps it open.

This doesn't mean healthy relationships avoid difficult conversations. Far from it. Love sometimes requires honesty. It requires accountability. It requires growth. But appreciation creates the emotional climate where those conversations can happen without damaging the relationship.

The people we love do not bloom because they are constantly corrected. They bloom because they are deeply appreciated.

The Power of Small Acts

Many people think appreciation requires grand romantic gestures. It doesn’t. Love is often expressed through the smallest moments. Thank your partner for making dinner. Tell them how delicious it tastes. Notice the effort they put into caring for your family. Kiss them before leaving for work. Wrap them in a warm hug when they come home. Tell them they look beautiful. Tell them they look handsome. Hold their hand while walking. Listen with your full attention when they share a story.

If they reveal something vulnerable, thank them for trusting you. Celebrate their courage. Take the dishes off their hands without being asked. Bring them coffee in the morning. Leave a thoughtful note where they'll unexpectedly find it.

Ask,

"How are you really doing?"

Then truly listen.

None of these gestures are complicated. But together they communicate one life-changing message: "I see you."

Appreciation Creates an Upward Spiral

One sincere compliment often inspires another. One thoughtful gesture invites another. One expression of kindness encourages another.

Appreciation has a beautiful way of multiplying itself. Couples begin smiling more. Laughing more. Helping each other more. Showing affection more freely.

What begins as one kind word often becomes a new culture within the relationship. An upward spiral replaces a downward one. Love becomes easier to express because both hearts feel safe.

A Lesson From the Soccer Field

Years ago, I coached my daughter's elementary school soccer team. One lesson from our coaching training has stayed with me ever since. We were encouraged to give approximately nine compliments for every correction we offered our young players.

Why?

Because confident children play better. Children who feel encouraged work harder. Children who believe in themselves enjoy the game more.

The goal wasn't to ignore mistakes. The goal was to build confidence first.

I've often thought… How much more should this principle apply to the people we love most?

Our spouses.

Our children.

Our friends.

Our coworkers.

Correction has its place. But encouragement helps people believe they can become the best version of themselves.

The Heart Has More Than Enough

There is an old saying often attributed to the Buddha:

Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.

Some people hesitate to offer appreciation as though compliments are a limited resource. As if encouraging another person somehow diminishes them.

The opposite is true. Scarcity comes from the ego. Generosity comes from the heart.

When we raise another person up, we all rise together—just as every boat is lifted by a rising tide. Appreciation is never lost. It always returns with interest.

A Spiritual Practice

I believe appreciation can become one of our greatest spiritual disciplines. The more consciously we appreciate life… the more naturally gratitude fills our hearts.

Appreciation plants the seed. Gratitude becomes the flower.

As our awareness grows, so does our reverence for the countless blessings surrounding us each day. We begin noticing God's fingerprints everywhere—

in nature,

in friendships,

in unexpected acts of kindness,

and in the people He has entrusted us to love.

Final Thoughts

Imagine what our families would look like if appreciation became a daily habit. Imagine workplaces where people regularly acknowledged one another's efforts. Imagine friendships strengthened by encouragement instead of comparison. Imagine marriages where both partners felt deeply seen, valued, and cherished.

The world changes one relationship at a time. Relationships change one conversation at a time. Conversations change one heartfelt expression of appreciation at a time.

So today, don't keep your appreciation to yourself. Tell someone why you admire them. Thank someone who quietly serves others. Notice the beauty that often goes unseen. Compliment freely. Encourage generously. Love intentionally. Because every sincere word of appreciation is like watering a flower. And wherever appreciation flows… people bloom.

May your words become sunlight.

May your kindness become water.

And may every relationship you tend become a flourishing garden where love grows, hearts heal, and people blossom into the beautiful souls God created them to be.

I appreciate your presence on this blog and your commitment to growth. Wishing you and inspiring new week!

All the best,
